NCCAV recently had the privilege of hosting 25 interns from the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s (NCDOT) 10-week Summer Internship Program for a day of immersive learning and hands-on experience at our transportation research facility.

These undergraduate and graduate students—many of whom are pursuing degrees in STEM fields—participated in in-depth discussions with NCCAV researchers about the evolving transportation landscape. The visit focused on emerging technologies, particularly the opportunities and challenges presented by autonomous vehicles (AVs) in both urban and rural contexts.

One of the most exciting parts of the visit? A ride aboard NC A&T’s autonomous shuttles, which operate on the university’s 2-mile rural test track, designed to simulate real-world driving conditions. This ride-along offered students a unique window into how AVs are tested, refined, and deployed to meet safety and efficiency standards.

The visit also sparked engaging conversations about how transportation technologies can be improved, especially in rural areas. From thoughtful questions about safety and infrastructure to discussions on workforce readiness, the interns brought a high level of insight and curiosity to the table.
